My Favorite Greek Dessert: Baklava
1 pound phyllo dough
1 1/2 cups finely crushed almonds
1/2 cups finely crushed walnuts
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup butter
1 cup water
3/4 cup honey
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon lemon juice
4 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
Mix the almonds, walnuts, 2 cups of sugar, and the 2 teaspoons of cinnamon in a large bowl. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Brush a small baking pan with butter. Place a phyllo sheet in the pan and trim it to fit. Brush the phyllo with melted butter. Keep the phyllo dough under a damp towel to prevent it from drying out. Spread the nut mixture on the buttered sheet. Place a phyllo sheet over the mixture and butter the top. Continue layering until you have reached the top. Pour any remaining butter on top.
Preheat the oven to 350°. Bake the baklava for about an hour. Combine the remaining sugar, water, honey, cloves, lemon juice, and cinnamon stick in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer until syrup has thickened. Remove from heat and then remove the cloves and cinnamon stick. Once the baklava is done, cut it into pieces. Drizzle syrup mixture on top. Let cool and serve.
